Frequently Asked Questions

Lip Blush

  • - Lip blushing is a cosmetic tattoo that enhances the natural color, shape, and definition of your lips. It is achieved by first mapping out your perfect lip shape, and then using a machine similar to a tattoo machine to implant the desired color. Lip blushing focuses on using shading to subtly blend the color into your natural lip color to mimic a tint or lip stain. This can also be done with a color similar to your natural lip if your goal is to enhance your lip shape and not change the color.

  • -We can’t tattoo outside of your natural lip tissue, as this would heal unevenly and look unnatural. However, most people’s natural lip color doesn’t fully extend to the edge of their lip tissue. By restoring that missing color, especially along the border, lip blushing creates the appearance of fuller, more defined, and more balanced lips while still looking completely natural. A great replacement for lip injections!

  • -We don’t apply numbing cream before creating the initial outline of your lips, as this ensures the mapping lines stay sharp and don’t smudge. During this step, you may feel some mild discomfort, but most clients rate it around 2/10 on the pain scale, and it only takes about 5 minutes.

Once the outline is complete, we apply numbing cream before tattooing the rest of the lips. This greatly reduces any discomfort, and additional numbing can be reapplied as needed throughout the procedure. Most clients describe the overall experience as a 4/10 on the pain scale. Since lips are a sensitive area, some sensation is normal, but we do everything possible to keep you comfortable during the process.

  • - Lip Blush lasts 1-3 years. Longevity depends on factors such as skin type, aftercare, and individual lifestyle.

Annual touch-ups should only be done once your permanent makeup has faded at least 50%. Frequent tanning, smoking, and sun-damaged skin tend to fade quicker over time and may need more touch-ups.

*Please keep in mind that the center of your lips will fade quicker than the outer edges since we are using the center of our lips everyday. This may create more of a natural ombre gradient as lips fade overtime.

    • Lip Blushing

Lip blushing enhances your natural lip shape, definition, and color, with results similar to a soft lip tint or stain. This look is achieved by layering sheer washes of pigment that blend with your natural lip tone, enhancing without completely covering your lips.

Our most popular style, lip blushing can mimic the tone of your favorite lip color while still looking natural, and it fades gracefully over time.

    • Natural Lip Blushing

This technique uses a shade close to your natural lip color to subtly define and balance the lips. It enhances your shape and symmetry without noticeably changing your overall lip color, perfect for those who want the most natural result.

    • Ombre Lip Blushing

This style creates depth and dimension by placing a slightly deeper shade around the outer edges of the lips, which gradually fades into a lighter tone in the center. The result is a soft ombre effect that makes the lips appear fuller and more defined.

    • Lipstick Lip Blushing

For clients who want a bolder, more polished look, lipstick lip blushing delivers richer color with stronger coverage. Unlike the sheer, natural finish of a standard lip blush, this style mimics the look of wearing lipstick every day, without the smudging or reapplication. It’s perfect for those who prefer a vibrant, makeup-ready finish.

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and heavy exercise 24 hours before your appointment.

Gently exfoliate your lips and keep them moisturized everyday at least 7 days before your appointment for the best results.

  • -Sunscreen is your best friend! Not only for your skin but also your PMU. Wear sunscreen on your lips DAILY to protect your permanent makeup and prevent premature pigment aging. Also, avoid strong skincare (acids, retinoids, peels) and heavy exfoliation on your lips for longer-lasting results.

  • Lip Blush is very likely to trigger an outbreak if you carry the virus. If you carry the herpes simplex virus (cold sores), it’s important to take an antiviral medication (like Valtrex) 3-5 days before and after the procedure to prevent outbreaks during healing.

L-Lysine is also a supplement you can take over the counter to help avoid cold sores, but it’s best to speak with your doctor before booking to minimize risk of an outbreak.

  • Initial Lip Blush Appointment: 2.5 - 3.5 hours. This includes time for our consultation, mapping out the lips, and numbing time.

    6-12 Week Lip Blush Touch-Up: 1-2 hours

Annual Lip Blush Touch-Up: 2-3 hours

  • - After your appointment, your lips will look about 30-50% darker and bolder than they will be healed. You may experience swelling and soreness on the day of your procedure.

Days 2-3 of healing your lips will oxidize meaning the color may appear darker than on the first day.

Days 4-6 your lips will begin to peel and become patchy. This stage goes by quick but you’ll want to keep your healing balm on your lips at all times for quicker healing.

After your lips are done peeling, they will appear lighter than normal. This is called the “frosty” stage. Over the next 2-4 weeks the color will begin “blooming” and you’ll see the finished results from your lip blush appointment. The healing process and timeline may vary for each individual, please follow proper precare and aftercare instructions to maintain healthy healing. For more information about pre-care, aftercare, and the healing process Click Here.

  • -Technically no, there is no downtime after getting permanent makeup. Most clients do not feel the need to take off work or stay home while healing but keep in mind your lips will be bold and peeling for the first week.

Your lips will be 30-50% darker and bolder on the first day with swelling, soreness, and redness. Your lips will continue to be bold for the next 1-2 days and then become patchy and dry with flaking the next 2-4 days.

You will want to avoid heavy sweating and exercise, direct sunlight, bodies of water, and dust/dirt circulating chores such as mowing the lawn for the first 7 days for proper healing. The only thing you will physically need to do to take care of your permanent makeup the first week is reapply your healing balm as frequently as needed.

  • - Yes, touch-up sessions are usually required to perfect the results and ensure longevity. Touch-up appointments are scheduled 6-12 weeks after the initial session. Please schedule your touch-up during the 6-12 week timeline to avoid price increases. Depending on the individual, additional touch-ups may be needed every 1-3 years. It is advised to wait till your lips are at least 50% faded to schedule your annual touch-up.

Please be advised that touch-up sessions and annual touch-ups are a separate charge from your initial appointment.

    6-12 week touch-up - $100

Late touchups have an added fee of $10 per month past the 6-12 week mark

    Annual Color Boost (12 - 48 months) - $250

  • We are not able to tattoo over any raised bump on the skin.

COLD SORE: We are not able to tattoo your lips until the cold sore has completely cleared up. Please keep in mind that lip blushing can trigger a cold sore outbreak and you will want to take a cold sore preventative like Valtrex 3-5 days before and after your lip blush to minimize an outbreak if you carry the cold sore virus.

PIMPLE / RASH: We cannot tattoo over pimples since it could cause an infection or worsen the breakout. Please reschedule as soon as possible if you are experiencing pimples or a rash on your lip area.

MOLES/ Other raised bumps: Due to health department and safety concerns, we are unable to tattoo over raised bumps and moles under any circumstances. We will tattoo around the mole/bump or you may have it removed before your procedure.

FORDYCE SPOTS: (Visible oil glands, white dots on lips) We ARE able to tattoo over fordyce spots but they may still be visible after lip blushing.

FRECKLES or MELASMA: We ARE able to tattoo over freckles or melasma but please keep in mind that lip blushing may not completely cover these areas and they may still be visible after healing.

SCARS: We ARE able to tattoo over scars but it may take multiple sessions to achieve desired saturation on the scar tissue.

*Those prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring should avoid Permanent Makeup and tattoos in general

  • Lip blushing is designed to enhance your natural lips with a long-lasting tint, but it won’t fully replace the look of traditional lipstick in every situation. Many clients find they no longer feel the need to wear lipstick daily, since their lips already look naturally colored and defined. However, if you enjoy switching up bold or dramatic shades, you can still apply lipstick or gloss over your healed lip blush with no problem. Think of lip blushing as your everyday base color.

However, if your goal is to replace your favorite lip gloss or stain, lip blushing can achieve that. Since the results heal to a natural blushy finish, all you’ll need is a clear gloss to bring back shine, no extra color required.

  • - It is advised to avoid wearing makeup or skincare on the treated area during the initial healing period. Once the permanent makeup has fully healed (7-10 days), you can resume wearing makeup. It's essential to use gentle products and avoid scrubbing the treated area during and after healing.

  • -Absolutely! Your results are completely customizable, I will work with you to determine the most suitable shape and color based on your skin tone and preferences. We will take into consideration your natural lip shape and volume and make minor adjustments to improve symmetry and either enhance or soften your cupid’s bow depending on your preferences. You may bring in inspiration photos of your desired lip color or your favorite lippie you wear everyday and we will create the perfect custom color for you. You will be able to approve the design each step of the way!

*Please note we are unable to tattoo outside of your natural lip skin, since this would yield unnatural results.

  • -Stop taking blood thinners like aspirin, niacin, vitamin E, fish oil, CoQ10, and ibuprofen 48 hours before the procedure

-No alcohol or caffeine 24 hours before the procedure

-No Botox treatments should be done 3 weeks prior or 4 weeks after the procedure

-No chemical peels 60 days before or after the procedure (brows will peel quicker due to chemicals traveling under the skin)

-No Retinols/Retin-A, or other anti-aging/acne creams and serums containing acids at least 2 weeks before your appointment

-Do not work out or sweat heavily on the day of the procedure

-Do not tan or have a sunburned face on the day of the procedure

-No waxing or tinting 3 days before the procedure

-No accutane at least 1 year before the procedure

  • -To promote proper healing, it is recommended to avoid these for the first 7-14 days:

Swimming, saunas, hot tubs, baths, pools, beaches, and lakes

Makeup and skincare at least one inch from brows

Direct water in the shower, minimize the amount of water on your brows ( I will provide you with shower shields to help with this)

    Excessive sweating and exercise

    Sleeping on face

    Touching brows with unwashed hands

Activities with airborne debris like dusting, mowing the lawn, or riding in open-air vehicles like boats or convertibles

    Facials, botox, or chemical peels

Strong skincare with Retinol or Acids

Picking, scratching, peeling, or rubbing treated area

Direct sun exposure for two weeks (apply sunscreen to brows after they are fully healed for longer-lasting results)

  • -Avoid heavy exercise and sweating 24 hours before your appointment and 3-5 days after your appointment. Heavy exercise before your appointment will cause an increase in blood flow and bleeding. Heavy sweating while your lips are healing is also not advised. The salt and bacteria in our sweat may cause significant fading or healing issues with fresh permanent makeup.

*Lips do not sweat so light exercise after your appointment is okay but please avoid saunas, hot tubs, and extreme sweating until lips are healed.

  • The sun is one of the biggest killers of permanent makeup. Especially during the first two weeks of healing. Direct sun exposure on fresh PMU brows may fade brows up to 90%. It is very important that you avoid direct sun exposure on your brows for the first 14 days of healing, please wear a hat or large sunglasses when in the sun and avoid tanning. After 7 days of healing you can start applying sunscreen on your brows daily to protect against premature fading.

  • If you have previous permanent makeup (no matter how faded) , you will need to send a photo for approval before booking. Please Email Us or Text Us a clear photo in direct lighting or your brows without makeup. Please note that all new clients will be priced at our “New Client Lips” rate.

  • -Machine: Permanent makeup machines are typically more gentle and have a lower vibration than a traditional tattoo machines.

-Pigments: Unlike traditional tattoo pigment, permanent makeup pigment is designed to fade away over 1-3 years. PMU pigments have a smaller particle size than traditional tattoo ink. This makes it easier for the ink to fade over time.

-Skin Depth: Permanent Makeup is placed in the layer of skin where the dermis meets the epidermis (the top layer of skin). Traditional tattoos are placed directly into the dermis. This means that permanent makeup is placed more superficial on the skin than traditional tattoos and will fade over time with the skin's natural regeneration process.
